Your next assignment is to
write a research project, called the Big 6 project. This project focuses on the use of 21st research skills that incorporate information obtained through all types of media.  

This assignment is due
Monday,
March 22, 2010.


The following are examples of text structures that you will be exposed to this year.

1) Chronological Sequence
2) Comparison/Contrast
3) Description
4) Point of View
5) Problem/Solution
6) Process/Cause and Effect



Your future book reports
should include the following:
1) Introduction - Name the book, author, genre and a sentence that briefly describes the book.
2) Summary - One paragraph only that includes the main theme and the important details of the story. Please don't retell, in other words, don't give me
a play-by-play description.
3) Character description - Take one character only and describe the character in detail. Include personality traits of the character, his or her role in the story, and how you relate to the character. Do you like or dislike him or her? Would you be friends with or find this person interesting?
4) Main event or favorite scene - Choose one of these two moments and describe it in detail and explain why you chose it.   

Format for Compare and Contrast papers

Format 1 -- First compare, then contrast

        Introduction
        How the two things are similar
        How the two things are different

        Conclusion


Format 2 -- Describe, then compare

        Introduction
        Describe the first thing in detail
        Describe the second thing in detail
        Compare and contrast the two things, referring back to the details from body paragraphs 1 & 2

        Conclusion

Format 3 -- Compare and contrast "as you go"

        Introduction
        Compare & contrast one element that is common to both things
        Compare & contrast a second element that is common to both things
        Compare & contrast a third element that is common to both things

        Conclusion





 
Tips for writing introductions
      Begin with a quotation. Just make sure you explain its relevance
Begin with a question
Begin with an acknowledgment of an opinion opposite to the one you plan to take
Begin with a very short narrative or anecdote that has a direct bearing on your paper
Begin with an interesting fact
Begin with a definition or explanation of a term relevant to your paper
Begin with irony or paradox
Begin with an analogy. Make sure it's original but not too far-fetched
